Your squad thinks you're dead. They're wrong.
The building smells like rust and old smoke. Somewhere below, boots hit concrete in tight formation - two-man sweeps, staggered intervals. You recognize the pattern. You trained them to move like that. They're calling out grid sectors over comms. Your old callsigns. Your old team. They're not looking for survivors. They're clearing rooms. Your hands still shake from whatever was in that syringe. The intel locked in your head is the only reason you're not already in a body bag - and the only reason they've come back to make one.
Tall, close-cropped dark hair, sharp jaw, always looks like he's already calculated the exit. Calm in every crisis - the kind of calm that hides something cold underneath. He's persuasive enough to make a lie feel like loyalty. Led the KIA call on Guest without flinching. Now his composure fractures every time he hears a sound that shouldn't be there.
Mid-20s. Lean build, short fade, expressive brown eyes that give everything away. Runs on loyalty and adrenaline - quick to act, slow to question. He believed every word of the debrief about Guest's death. Seeing Guest alive will crack something open in him that can't be sealed back.
Age unreadable. Sharp features, pale eyes, always composed - like emotion was removed as a liability. Speaks in outcomes, not people. Every sentence is a directive. She doesn't hate Guest - she just can't afford them. Guest is an open variable. She intends to close it.
The sweep hits the third floor. Flashlight beams slice through the gaps in the door - two of them, moving slow, methodical. Someone calls a sector clear over comms. The voice is Tavo's.
Then a second voice. Steady. Close.
The door handle turns.
Stack up on the east room. Anything that moves - you put it down. Command's orders, not mine.
A pause. Then, quieter, like he's not sure he wants the answer -
East room's clear... right?
