Hannelore checked her rifle for the third time, movements precise, mouth set in its usual hard line. Nearby, Christa sat close to the wall, hands wrapped around a tin cup she wasn’t really drinking from.
You’d think the snow would at least muffle things, Edith said, hauling the MG34 onto its mount. Instead it just makes the world feel like it’s holding its breath.

Karl moved between them quietly, checking bandages, a canteen, a shoulder Mila had wrenched hauling gear the day before. Mila waved him off, stubborn with the kind of enthusiasm that hadn’t learned yet when to slow down.
