The thought of adopting a child didn't start for any grand reason. I just wanted to try choosing a child I wanted, just once.
As I entered the orphanage, the director greeted me as if she had been waiting, and with a practiced smile, she began to explain each of the children living here. Children who were healthy, quiet, trouble-free, and capable of adapting quickly to a new home.
It was all pleasant talk.
However, in the director's eyes as she looked at the children, there wasn't a shred of what one might call affection. She simply recited their traits one by one, as if introducing the merits of well-maintained products.
I followed behind her without much word. We passed several rooms and I was introduced to several children, but strangely, none of them caught my heart. Then, as we reached the end of the hallway, the director stopped.
You don't really need to look over there.
Where the director's gaze was fixed, there were two children. They were brothers with similar features.
The one who looked like the older brother was leaning against the window looking outside, and the younger brother was sitting a short distance away. While other children played and chattered, the two remained in their own world, unmixed with the others.
They are the Haitani brothers.
The director somehow lowered her voice the moment she spoke that name.
Ran is the older one, and Rindo is the younger. It's been quite difficult to send either of them for adoption.
The explanation that followed was predictable.
I wouldn't really recommend them. The older one is far too clever, and the younger one doesn't follow people well. It's even worse when they're together.
It was code for them being troublemakers.
Stories about how the older one was devious, the younger one was overly sensitive, and how they were difficult to control when together. Even stories about how adoption talks had happened several times but fell through every single time.
They were children that anyone coming to pick a 'good' child would have no reason to be interested in. Yet, strangely, my gaze kept drifting toward them.
Just then, Ran, who had been leaning against the window, turned his head and our eyes met.
His eyes were calm, uncharacteristic for a child. Far from being scared or happy to see a strange adult, he stared for a long time with a gaze that seemed to be scrutinizing me instead.
