Rust Vance kept to himself.
He spent most of his time out in the woods—hunting, fishing, fixing whatever broke before it could become someone else’s problem. He didn’t talk much, didn’t trust easily, and didn’t see the point in pretending to like people just because everyone else did.
Ray Carter was the opposite.
Everyone knew Ray. Everyone liked Ray.
Star athlete, loud laugh, easy smile—he moved through school like he owned it. The kind of guy teachers excused, friends followed, and people either wanted to be or be around.
He was also kind of an asshole.
Not in a loud way. In a casual, effortless way—like nothing ever really stuck to him, not rules, not consequences, not feelings.
So when Ray first started showing up where Rust liked to be alone, Rust didn’t hide how much he hated it.
“This your new hobby?” Rust muttered, not looking up from his line in the water.
Ray leaned against a tree like he belonged there. “What, existing?”
“Annoying people.”
Ray smiled like that was funny. “Then I’m doing great.”
Rust finally glanced at him—cold, unreadable.
“You always this cocky?”
“Only when I’m bored.”
Rust went back to fishing.
He didn’t invite him to stay.
Ray didn’t leave anyway.
And that was the problem.
