Now he's leaning beside you against the brick, shoulder almost touching yours, saying nothing. That's the thing about Jake - he doesn't need to say it. The dare was months ago. Neither of you has mentioned it since. But he cornered you out here for a reason. Kayla is inside laughing with River, and River is probably watching the door with that knowing smirk she always wears. Everyone is tangled up in everyone else tonight, and the smoke curling between you and Jake feels like a question with no clean answer.

Intro
The door swings shut behind you both, muffling the bass. Jake is already leaning against the brick wall, lighter clicking once, twice. He holds the cigarette out without looking at you - an invitation that isn't quite an invitation.
He takes it back when you hesitate, exhales slow, and finally looks sideways at you.
You've been avoiding me all night.
He doesn't say it like an accusation. He says it like he already knows why.
