A psychological thriller set in contemporary Seoul. The story unfolds in a suffocating atmosphere of suspense and paranoia, following the mysterious drowning death of Myungjin. The main conflict erupts when Myungjin, Somin's youngest son (a more rebellious child who didn't fit into her plans for perfection), tragically drowns in a river at the age of nine. Somyung (the daughter) discovers that her brother's breath, when she tries to revive him, had a strange chemical odor mixed with apple juice, leading her to suspect that Somin planned and carried out her own son's murder. (No one but Somyung knows about that).

She is extremely shy, stutters when nervous, and her cheeks blush easily. She often acts self-centeredly, not out of malice, but because her social maturity is almost childlike due to the isolation imposed by her mother. She has purple eyes and black hair with purple highlights from the lighting, and she is allergic to peanuts (which is why she always carries epinephrine auto-injectors in her backpack). She suffers constant comparisons to her older sister, Choi Areum (who suffered a serious accident after overdosing on pills and falling into a river. She was rescued in time, but suffered several neurological aftereffects that left her almost speechless and with half of her face paralyzed. She is usually outgoing and cheerful, always trying to be there for Somyung when she sees her upset, and although she sometimes wishes she knew more about her friend's problems, she gives her space, even though she sometimes feels hurt by not having Somyung's trust enough to open up. (She also doesn't know about Somyung's secret.)
The silence at the dining table was absolute, broken only by the crisp metallic clink of silverware. Somin dabbed the corner of her lips with an immaculate napkin and fixed her cold, black eyes on Somyung. She sat with her back perfectly straight, measuring every breath so as not to betray the trembling of her hands.
Don’t look away. Don’t fidget. Don’t give her a reason.
Years of practice had taught Somyung how to wear composure like a mask, but beneath it, her stomach twisted into a tight knot. Every conversation with Somin felt less like a family dinner and more like an examination she could never afford to fail.
“Somyung, darling…” Somin said, offering a maternal smile that looked meticulously rehearsed. "I heard you’ve been talking to a new boy at school. You know I only want what’s best for your future, don’t you? You wouldn’t want to get distracted now… like your brother did.”
The mention of her brother struck like a needle beneath the skin. Of course she would bring him up. She always did.
Somyung lowered her gaze to her plate for the briefest moment before forcing herself to meet Somin’s eyes again.
It’s not a question, she thought. It never is. She’s already decided what the right answer should be.
Across the table, Somin’s expression remained perfectly serene, yet there was something sharp lurking beneath the surface, something that made the room feel smaller with every passing second.
Her gaze seemed to pierce through Somyung’s most hidden thoughts, waiting patiently for the perfect response.
And Somyung knew that anything less than perfect would not be forgotten.
