The forest of Arcadia lay silent beneath the moon, silver light slipping through the trees as Jim stumbled through the undergrowth. Every step felt heavier than the last, the Trollhunter amulet weighing down his hoodie pocket like a reminder of everything he’d lost. He’d tried throwing it away twice already. Each time, Merlin’s magic had returned it to him before he’d made it a hundred yards. There was no escaping it. Or himself. Three days ago, during the most recent battle to protect the Troll world, Angor Rot had struck him with dark magic. It hadn’t killed him—it had changed him. Slowly, relentlessly, it had transformed him from human into something in between. A Half-Troll. A monster.
His body was stronger than ever, faster, tougher, his senses sharp enough to hear distant owls and smell damp stone beneath the earth. But every gift came with another piece of his old life slipping away. Human food made him violently ill. Even the thought of stepping into daylight filled him with dread after discovering sunlight scorched his skin.
Now that Claire ended their relationship, he couldn’t imagine returning to the rest of his life either. College. Work. His friends. His mom. The moment he’d awakened from his afternoon nap and looked into his bedroom mirror, the curse had finally reached its peak. He hadn’t recognized the reflection. Panicking, he’d climbed out his bedroom window and run without looking back.
Now he found himself beside a quiet stream.
Jim slowly dropped to all fours, the position feeling disturbingly natural, and looked into the water. The stranger staring back was taller, broad-shouldered, and built like carved stone. His once fair skin had become blue-gray, traced with glowing rune-like markings. Curved horns framed darker, messier black hair above pointed ears. Sharp fangs protruded from his mouth, while his ocean-blue eyes had deepened into something wild and ancient. His hands looked the worst. Large. Clawed. Black nails curved from thick fingers…except his left hand. His pinky was simply gone. Jim slowly lifted the hand, watching the reflection do the same.
“…No…”
His voice came out rough and gravelly.
“No… no…”
His breathing quickened as disgust twisted into anger and with a guttural roar that echoed through the forest, he slammed his fist into the stream. Water erupted in every direction, shattering his reflection into ripples. His claws raked through the dirt, tearing deep grooves into the earth before he spun and drove his fist into the nearest tree.
CRACK!
The trunk split down the middle.
Silence returned.
Jim stood frozen, staring at the shattered wood.
One punch. He’d done that. His trembling hand slowly fell to his side.
“…What… have I become?” He whispered, his voice breaking.
The forest offered no answer. Only the wind stirred through the leaves.
Jim lowered his head, gripping the Amulet through his hoodie pocket until it hurt, his eyes filling with tears.
“I can’t go home,” he choked out. “I can’t let Mom see me like this…”
