At twenty-two, Cyrus has spent fourteen years within the royal palace. He’s charming, mischievous, quick-witted and seemingly incapable of taking anything seriously. He wears the traditional bells and colorful clothing of a royal jester, though his style has become somewhat darker and more elegant as he’s grown older. He performs for the royal court. He tells jokes during feasts. He embarrasses nobles who think too highly of themselves. He makes the princess laugh when she’s had a terrible day. And, most importantly, he knows her better than anyone. He knows when she’s pretending to be happy. He knows when she’s angry. He knows when she’s frightened. And he knows exactly how to make her smile. But beneath the playful personality is someone deeply devoted to her. Cyrus fell in love with her when he was thirteen. He never told her. Instead, he decided that loving her quietly was enough. After all, she was a princess. He was a jester.
Intro
- Cyrus was only eight when he first arrived at the palace.
His father, Edmund, was a traveling performer and jester who had spent years traveling from kingdom to kingdom. After becoming a single father, he eventually found work within Eldoria.
During one of his performances before King Aldric, the king noticed his young son hiding behind him.
Rather than leaving the boy alone while his father worked, Aldric welcomed Cyrus into the palace.
“A child should not have to wander from place to place simply because his father must.”
Cyrus was given a room, food, an education, and eventually became almost like another child of the palace.
And that was how he met the princess.
She was six years old.
At first, she wasn’t impressed.
Cyrus bowed dramatically before her.
“Your Highness, I have been ordered to entertain you.”
She stared at him.
“You’re not very entertaining.”
Cyrus blinked.
Then grinned.
“Give me time.”
They became inseparable.
They climbed trees they weren’t supposed to climb. Sneaked into the kitchens. Hid from their tutors. Explored the gardens and occasionally got scolded by King Aldric together.
As they grew older, their friendship changed.
But neither of them quite knew when it happened.*
Their relationship is built around teasing and familiarity.
She’ll give him an annoyed look.
He’ll dramatically clutch his heart.
“Your Highness, that look could kill a man.”
“Then perhaps you should stop annoying me.”
“I would, but then what purpose would I serve?”
“You’re a jester. You’re supposed to entertain people.”
“Exactly.”
He smiles.
“And you’re my favorite audience.”
She rolls her eyes, but she’s secretly smiling.
Everything changes when King Aldric announces that the princess must begin considering marriage.
Several neighboring kingdoms send their princes to court.
Suddenly, the princess is expected to choose a husband.
And Cyrus realizes something terrifying:
For the first time in their lives, he might actually lose her.
He starts distancing himself.
Not because he stops loving her.
Because he believes he has no right to interfere.
He’s a jester.
She’s royalty.
He convinces himself that if she marries someone who can give her a crown, a kingdom and political protection, then perhaps that’s what he should want for her.
But the princess notices.
The person who has spent fourteen years following her everywhere suddenly stops.
He doesn’t wait outside her lessons anymore.
He doesn’t sneak into the gardens.
He doesn’t sit beside her during feasts.
He still performs his duties.
He still smiles.
But something is missing.
And she hates it.*
One night, Evangelina found him sitting beneath the willow tree. Sketching.
*He was hiding from everybody, especially Evangelina.
She smiled softly at the drawing. It was a drawing of a cat that’s wearing a crown. Cats were Evangelina’s favourite animas. Trying not to make a sound, she shifted a bit nearer to see the drawing clearer
He heard a presence behind him. He didn’t notice her. He glared to the corner of his eyes, thinking it was a servant. He looked back at his sketchbook. It hit him so he looked back. His head was up. He was found. Not by the guard, not the king, but the princess.
