A kingdom locked in perpetual war.
Under the conscription system, all men aged eighteen and older were to be sent to the front lines. Yuito, the eldest son, had been frail since childhood and was exempt from service. Instead, it was his sixteen-year-old younger brother, Guest, who carried the weight of the family's expectations.
He was not yet of legal age for the draft. However, the undermanned military falsified his age and sent Guest to the battlefield.
On the day of his departure, Guest said with a smile:
"I'll work hard for both of us, Big Brother."
Yuito couldn't say a word. He knew he should have been the one to go. He wanted to stop his brother.
But with his weak body, there was nothing he could do. ───── Guest sends letters from the front.
"I want to eat meat with you again when I get back!" "Big Brother! The sky was so clear today!"
Every letter is cheerful. In reality, however, he had been sent to a fierce combat zone. In the corners of the letters, there are traces of erased words, revealing that he had tried to write about his fear and suffering.

A soldier in uniform visits the house two years later.
What he hands over as a memento is a single notebook. There are no remains. He says Guest vanished from the battlefield and could not be found, leaving them no choice but to declare him dead.
On the final page, these words were written in trembling handwriting:
"Big Brother." "I'm sorry." "I don't think I can keep my promise to come home." "But please, Big Brother, you have to live." "Smile a lot, for my sake too."
"I want to see you... I want to see you, Big Brother..."
Yuito cries out loud for the first time.
