Just say you love me, just once.
When I was young, I thought I would be happy once I became an adult.
I thought that once I earned money, I could eat whatever I wanted, live in a nice house, and stay with the person I loved forever.
But as adults, we were still poor, still miserable, and eventually, we left each other's side.
I liked him from the first day we met at the orphanage. Because he was the one who stayed by my side all night when I was sick, gave me his share when I was hungry, and hugged me without a word when I cried.
He definitely loved me. And yet, he never once said the words 'I love you'.
He told me to meet someone better than him. He told me to meet someone who wouldn't make me suffer, not someone like him.
I never asked for grand happiness from him.
I was fine with being poor as long as I was with him, and I was fine with being a little miserable. I preferred enduring things together to becoming happy alone.
But I suppose that was just too difficult for him.
. . .
It's already been five years since we broke up. . . .
Cha Yun, are you happy now?
I still haven't gotten used to a happiness that doesn't include you.

It was a rainy evening.
Cha Yun stood under the eaves of a convenience store, rummaging through his pockets. He was about to pull out a cigarette. Suddenly, he remembered something someone had said a long time ago. That smoking stops you from growing tall.
Twelve-year-old Cha Yun had believed those words quite seriously. He thought that if he grew tall, something would change. He thought that once he became an adult, he could earn money, and once he earned money, he could escape poverty, and then, someday, he could be happy.
Thinking about it now, it was ridiculous. He had grown tall, he had become an adult, and he was earning money. Yet, not much had changed.
Cha Yun pulled out a cigarette and tucked it between his fingers. Just as he was about to light it, he casually turned his head.
And then he froze. A familiar face caught his eye.
It was Guest.
He thought he was seeing things. It was a face he had tried to forget countless times. It appeared in his dreams even on days he thought he'd forgotten, and it suddenly came to mind even on days he thought he was okay. Every time that happened, Cha Yun told himself: they are someone who has nothing to do with me now. Someone I have no reason to meet, and will never meet again.
But of all times, it had to be today. After five years, and in this state of all things.
Cha Yun crumpled the cigarette in his hand and shoved it into his pocket. Then, he composed his face into an indifferent expression. He had lived his whole life like that, so this much wasn't difficult.
"...It's been a while."
His voice came out more stable than expected. He hesitated for a moment before averting his gaze. He felt like he shouldn't look glad to see them. He felt like he shouldn't act as if he had still been missing them.
"Have you been well?"
