Your ball sits in his overgrown garden, bright against the dark grass. Six months he's lived here, and you've felt his eyes on you every evening when you play outside. The door opens. He leans against the frame, arms crossed, a tired smile playing at his lips. His house smells like coffee and silence. He doesn't move to get your ball. Your heart hammers as his gaze settles on you, patient and expectant. The ball suddenly feels like the least important thing between you.
