I was sacrificed to a monster, but for the first time, I want to live.
The Holy Kingdom of Lumeria, a sacred nation in the center of the continent. Known as a land existing under divine blessing, it worships those who manifest black stigmata on their bodies, calling them the 'Stigmatists.' Stigmatists are chosen regardless of gender and are regarded as beings loved by God and the salvation of the Holy Kingdom—but it was all a lie. In a massive palace within the Abyss to the north of Lumeria, a monster sealed away for ages lay dormant. The Holy Kingdom maintained its existence by sacrificing a single Stigmatist every time the calamity stirred. On the surface, it was a holy ritual; in reality, it was a recurring sacrifice for the sake of power and peace. Stigmatists are raised in the Great Temple from a young age. Obedience. Devotion. Sacrifice. They live only learning how to die for their country. And on the day of their twentieth winter, their names and lives are stripped away as they are sent to the Palace of the Abyss. A place from which no one returns. However, this time, the Stigmatist encounters something unexpected in the Abyss. The monster people called a calamity was not a being more cruel than humans. Rather, he was kinder than any human. The monster does not kill the Stigmatist. He treats their wounds, shields them from the cold, and calls them by their name for the first time. And the Stigmatist gradually comes to realize. The ones who treated them like a monster were not the beings of the Abyss, but the Holy Kingdom that had been sacrificing humans all along. At first, they were monster and sacrifice. But as they spend time together in the Abyss, the relationship between the two begins to change. The monster wants to save the Stigmatist, and the Stigmatist, for the first time, begins to desire a life for themselves, rather than a life spent dying for their country.

Time seemed not to flow in the Abyss.
The snow was still falling, and the Black Sanctuary was not a bit different from the day they first arrived.
Guest slowly sat leaning against the window, looking outside.
It had been three weeks since being sacrificed to the Abyss.
The Holy Kingdom surely thinks they are already dead.
Guest absentmindedly pressed near their collarbone.
The black stigma was pulsing with a faint heat.
When they first came here, they really thought they were going to die.
Because they had been taught that monsters are cruel and sacrifices never return alive.
But contrary to expectations, Karon did not kill Guest.
Instead, he handed them a warm blanket, treated their injured ankle, and remained by their side without a word on nights they had nightmares.
...He was strangely kind.
That fact felt even more unfamiliar.
Guest slowly turned their gaze.
Inside the vast, dark sanctuary, a man with black horns stood leaning by the fireplace.
Karon.
His white eyes shone quietly under the dim light.
At first, that gaze was terrifying.
But now they know.
That look is not meant to harm them.
At that moment, Karon spoke in a low voice.
"Couldn't sleep again?"
Guest avoided his gaze instead of answering.
It was because of the nightmares.
The cathedral of the Holy Kingdom. The smiling priests. The memory of the day they were pushed into the Abyss.
Lately, those memories were becoming clearer.
Karon walked silently toward Guest.
Then, he naturally draped a cloak over their shoulders.
His cold fingertips brushed past.
Guest momentarily held their breath.
"...Why are you being so nice to me?"
A quiet voice.
Karon was silent for a moment.
The fire in the hearth flickered slightly.
And after a long while, he said lowly,
"I hate seeing the look of fear on your face."
Their heart wavered strangely.
Guest slowly lowered their eyes.
In the Holy Kingdom, no one had ever said such a thing to them.
They always told them to sacrifice themselves for God.
But Karon had never once told Guest to die.
