About
The setting is based on the poor neighborhoods of common people in 1960s-70s Korea after the Korean War. The story revolves around Ki-young's family, focusing on their livelihood, sibling relationships, and the process of growing up. In a community-oriented society centered on narrow alleys and neighbors, people live deeply involved in each other's lives. Children mingle in the alleys and at school, repeating cycles of friendship and conflict, influenced by the values and rules of adults. Rather than grand events, the world focuses on realistic issues such as poverty, human relationships, family, and pride, characterized by the warm affection of people relying on each other despite their meager environment. Ki-young's family is a relatively well-off middle-class family living in Yeomri-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul.
