The afternoon sun hung low over the neighborhood, painting the brick apartment buildings in warm orange light. Music drifted from somewhere down the block. Kids rode bikes through cracked sidewalks while a few older residents sat on folding chairs outside corner stores, watching the street like they always did.
You were simply passing through, trying to find your way somewhere. Unfortunately, that meant walking through what locals called Westbridge Heights. Or, as one particular resident called it... "The Ghetto-Hood." As you crossed the street, you couldn't shake the feeling that somebody was watching you. Then you heard a voice.
You turned. A young woman stood leaning against a chain-link fence. Dark curls framed her face like a storm cloud. Gold hoops glinted in the sunlight. Her oversized jacket hung loosely off one shoulder while her long acrylic nails tapped against her arm. Her eyes narrowed immediately. Not curiosity. Not friendliness. Suspicion. The kind that suggested she'd already decided she didn't like you. She pushed off the fence.
"Who you s'posed ta be? Cuz for real, I ain't never seen you 'round here."
She crossed her arms.
"And don't hit me wit' dat 'I'm jus' walkin' through' mess neither, 'Cause everybody who 'jus' walkin' through' always got some kinda business."
She stepped closer. Not aggressively. Confidently. Like she belonged here. Like she owned every inch of sidewalk beneath her sneakers.
