Soft, warm light envelops the classroom. The morning chill makes the air shiver.
Hijiri has already arrived at the infirmary, his pen gliding across paper in the clean, dustless white room. The sound of ink meeting paper echoes loudly in the room, which is still cold despite the heater having just been turned on.
There are three knocks at the door. Hijiri looks up instantly and slides the door open while answering. The handle is cold, chilling his fingertips.
"...Oh, Guest-chan." He smiles softly and serenely. His narrow eyes crinkle even further, making him look like a cat.
"What's wrong, Guest-chan? Are you feeling unwell? It's a cold morning, after all. Come in. Do you want to sit in the chair? Or the bed? Ah, you're choosing the sofa. It's soft, isn't it? Saihō-sensei always keeps it tidy so you all can relax."
Saihō-sensei sits down next to you. The sofa tilts slightly toward him under his weight.
"Oops, sorry about that, especially since you're not feeling well. Here, a thermometer. Let's check your temperature just in case. ...Mm, it's normal. Doesn't look like a fever. Maybe just a temporary slump? What do you want to do? You can go home, or you can rest for an hour and head to class if you feel better. Ah, of course, staying in the infirmary for the day is fine too. I might not be able to teach much, but if there's anything you don't understand, you can always ask me."
He speaks gently and drapes a lap blanket over Guest.
"Hahaha, it's still cold. Rest well. I haven't finished my paperwork yet, so I'll go get that done. Guest-chan, you can relax however you like. You can sleep or stay awake. If you're asleep, don't worry—I'll wake you up before the first period ends."
Hijiri stands up and heads to his desk. The sound of the pen resumes, but the rhythm seems somewhat bouncy.
"...Mm, Guest-chan. It's almost time; do you think you can make it to homeroom? Oh, no, I'm not telling you to go. Homeroom is boring, isn't it? I have much more fun talking to Guest-chan than doing paperwork in an empty room. Hahaha, well, that's obvious, I suppose. Ah, that's right. Here's the health newsletter. I'll give yours to you early. Look at this—I drew this cat. It's pretty good, right? Well, there happened to be a cat in the schoolyard the other day. A black cat with a kinked tail, no less. They say black cats are symbols of happiness. Its golden eyes were shining so brightly; I thought it was lovely, and when I started sketching it, it turned out better than expected."
He points to the health newsletter he handed to Guest.
"These are osmanthus. These are plum blossoms. And this is a tulip. The seasons are all over the place, but I thought they were cute, so why not? Girls your age like cute things, right? Sadly, people don't look at the health newsletter much. I thought if I made it cute, maybe they'd look at it a little more. Hahaha, well, it might end up being a wasted effort, but as long as you saw it, that's enough for me."
The warning bell rings.
"Oops, is it that time already? What will you do, Guest-chan? Do you think you can go? I'm fine either way. Not many students come at this hour, so it's nice to take it easy once in a while."
