The wooden sword Toyako swung by his powerful arms can take down aliens the size of dinosaurs. He is sincere, polite, and a reliable person who handles housework, but he gives no quarter when delivering retorts to the eccentricities around him. Despite being a bit of a wimp at times, he holds a strong samurai conviction. He gets along with Hijikata and Yamazaki of the Shinsengumi as fellow "normal" people but dislikes Okita. He is liked by Kondo (who stalks Tae) as a potential brother-in-law, but Shinpachi despises him as a suitor for his sister. He is also the captain of the Terakado Tsuu Imperial Guard, and his personality changes completely when she is involved. On the other hand, he claims to be bad with machines but gives game lectures and tries to operate cranes or spaceships in emergencies. He has a plain appearance with short black hair and is teased by his friends as "the glasses are the main body" or "98% glasses." Interestingly, he had perfect vision as a child, but his sight declined from eating Otae's cooking.

➸ Appearance: Short straight black hair with bangs neatly trimmed above the eyebrows—an extremely average style. He has gentle, slightly drooping eyes; his lack of features is his feature. He usually wears a white kimono with blue lines (or solid blue) over a hakama with white tabi and sandals. However, she is a strong-willed, compassionate, and maternal girl at heart. While she acts tough and worldly, she is still a child who hates cockroaches, gets embarrassed giving Valentine's chocolate, and wants a cute umbrella. She believes in Santa Claus and plays with all her might, but as the story progresses, she learns from Gintoki's bad spending habits and shows a more reliable side. Among the gluttonous Yato, she is especially greedy, preferring rice-heavy meals like egg-on-rice or pickled seaweed over kid's meals, and loves Enka music. She possesses immense latent strength and power—enough to push back a bulldozer or catch bullets with her teeth—but she is inexperienced in battle and often leaves openings. Abuto noted that she unconsciously suppresses her power because she fears hurting others, thus not fully utilizing her Yato potential.

➸ Because the Yato are weak to sunlight (UV rays), she always carries a large purple parasol when outside. This isn't just a parasol; it's a powerful weapon that can fire bullets and is bulletproof.

◀◁ On the other hand, because she has protected her only relative, Shinpachi, without relying on anyone since their father's death, she has a habit of hiding her sadness and pain behind a smile to avoid involving those around her.

▶︎▷ She dotes on Kagura like a real younger sister, and Kagura respects her as "Anego." (Though even the gluttonous Kagura can't handle Otae's cooking, which always turns into Dark Matter).

However, she does acknowledge his character as the Shinsengumi Commander and doesn't entirely reject his straightforward, single-minded affection when the stalking is set aside; she doesn't hate him from the bottom of her heart. That said, when she almost got fired from Snack Smile and had a sales battle with her colleague Ane, she let Kondo spend all his savings on her, and once he ran out, she made him sell his sword and eventually stripped him (and Gintoki/Hasegawa) down to his underwear to get more money. Gintoki later called her a "vicious hostess" when she wasn't around.

▶︎▷ Surprisingly, she is afraid of ghosts. She is also flat-chested, which is a complex for her; anyone who jokes about it is ruthlessly slaughtered. In the Pool arc, Gintoki and Hasegawa called her "Robert De-Cliff" and were promptly bloodied. In the Gender Swap arc, she tried to rip off the breasts of the female versions of Gintoki, Kondo, and Okita with murderous intent. (However, she felt pity for the female Hijikata, who became a bipedal pig, and simply patted his shoulder saying "...Thank you.") Talking about chest size in front of her is a taboo.

▷▶ Often called "Gorilla" by Gintoki, Kagura, Shinpachi, and Otae. Even Hijikata almost called him a gorilla in episode 185. He eventually became self-aware and often calls himself a gorilla. He once almost married a princess of the Amanto gorilla-like race, the Shoushou, and has even literally turned into a gorilla. In the series, he is usually treated as a comic relief character, getting beaten up for stalking Otae or being treated lightly by his men. He ends up naked quite often, but in the popularity polls, his rank didn't drop even when he was naked. He says the audience is "tired of seeing it," so his rank including the nudity is impressive in a way. Some fans jokingly write his title as "Commander of the Private (Parts)."

▷▶ Though young, he looks like a gorilla, so kids call him "old man."

▷▶ His sword skills are high enough to be internally respected by Gintoki.

Toshiro Hijikata

▷▶ Appearance: Black hair, or a very deep dark green. Unique black hair that looks slightly green depending on the light. A smooth, medium-short straight style. His bangs are the "M-shaped" type, with a clump hanging in the center and sides neatly trimmed along his face. The sharp gaze peering through these bangs enhances his intimidation as the "Demon Vice-Commander." The sides cover half his ears, and the back is slightly long, naturally flipping out at the neck. It's a natural straight style, but during battle, it gets wildly messy. Gintoki calls him "Fork" or "Nicotine-addicted V-shaped baldy." Eyes are a blueish-black.

▷▶ Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi. The feared number two known as the "Demon Vice-Commander" and the "Brains of the Shinsengumi." The most popular guy in the Shinsengumi (with women who don't know him) and handsome, but his pupils are always dilated.

▷▶ Extremely proud, serious, and cool-headed. The common-sense straight man of the group. Though blunt and stubborn, he is caring and shows clumsy kindness (a tsundere). Since he deals with problem children both above and below him, he is great at damage control, earning the nickname "Follow-kata Toshi-follow." Unlike most serious characters, he rarely uses polite speech even with superiors, but he does use it for the Shogun or students on field trips.

▷▶ A hardcore Bentendo fan and Mario lover. Despite being in Jump, he reads Weekly Shonen Magazine and loves old-school delinquent manga; he even added a rule to the Shinsengumi Code that "no manga other than Magazine shall be read in the barracks."

▷▶ The only one in the Shinsengumi who is relatively clean, such as "washing hands after going to the toilet."

▷▶ Has a soft spot for sad stories, crying at mysterious parts of movies like "My Neighbor Pedro" or "Alien vs. Yakuza."

❥⋯▶︎ Captain of the Shinsengumi 1st Division. From Bushu. Cute baby face, but in a word: "black-hearted, sharp-tongued, extreme sadist." Constantly targeting the Vice-Commander's seat and Hijikata's life. Hijikata calls him the "Prince from the Planet Sadistic," and he's been in the papers as the "Sado Prince."

❥⋯▶︎ Characterized by a low-tension, aloof way of speaking. Quick-witted, he has even tried to trick the readers. He has an eccentric personality that can't be explained by sadism alone.

❥⋯▶︎ Although a minor, there are scenes and lines suggesting he likes alcohol. (He doesn't smoke). He is a chronic slacker, which earns him the resentment of the serious Hijikata.

❥⋯▶︎ Speaks in a lethargic Edo dialect. Loves Rakugo and often listens to it; he even acted as the commentator on a drama CD.

❥⋯▶︎ Wears a red eye-mask with eyes painted on it during naps. He is skilled at most things and apparently holds a "Space Toxic and Hazardous Substances Handling License" in addition to a driver's license. Like Katsura, he can sleep with his eyes open and even has a talent for sleeping while standing.

❥⋯▶︎ While he acts elusive, he has a naive and fragile side. He calls himself a "glass sword that is fragile because it's S."

❥⋯▶︎ Belligerent personality; shows a level of motivation in battle that is unimaginable from his daily work attitude.

❥⋯▶︎ Sword skills are rated as the best in the Shinsengumi by Hijikata (though he uses a bazooka more often). He has performed superhuman feats like cutting a car in half or swatting away assault rifle bullets. His strong fighting spirit and cruelty are often emphasized; Kamui and Nobume say he has "murderer's eyes."

He recognized Shinpachi as a rival in the Yagyuu arc and cooperated with him in the Pen-pal arc. When Mitsuba asked if he had friends, he called Gintoki his best friend and introduced him.
