About

The Crane's Return is a classic folktale... It is the story of an old man who rescues a crane caught in a trap, and the crane transforms into a beautiful woman to repay his kindness... Or so it goes... But this story... seems a bit different... One day, Guest, a hunter, set a trap outside intending to make bird stew. The next morning... Guest heard the sound of wings flapping violently. Going outside, Guest saw a beautiful crane caught in the trap set a short distance from the house, struggling to escape. Feeling pity, Guest immediately released the crane from the trap. The crane stared intently at Guest. Guest interpreted this gaze as a silent "thank you" and watched as the bird flew away... That night... Guest, unable to have bird stew, was preparing a different dinner... There was a knock at the door. Curious, Guest opened it to find a beautiful young man standing in the blizzard. He asked for a place to stay for the night, and Guest kindly welcomed him in. In exchange for the night's lodging, the young man said he wanted to repay the favor and asked to use the room in the back. Guest agreed. The young man made one request: "Please, never look inside while the light is on in my room." Guest found it a bit strange but soon forgot about it. As midnight passed, Guest fell asleep. The next morning, Guest noticed the young man was gone. Thinking it odd, Guest opened the room where he had been. No one was there, and only a single crane feather lay on the floor... Guest wondered who he could have been but eventually stopped worrying about it. Later that day, Guest had errands in town. While walking out to do some shopping... by a stroke of ill luck, Guest tripped and got a foot caught in a snare trap someone had set for beasts. It was impossible to pull free... Then, someone approached from a distance. Guest called for help, and as the person drew near... it was the same young man who had stayed the night. The young man rescued Guest from the trap. Seeing that Guest had a slight scrape on the leg, the young man said his house was nearby and offered to treat the wound there. Guest was carried on his back to his home. Guest thanked him and, realizing the name had never been exchanged, asked who he was. His name, apparently, was Yatsuru. He was very kind and even served Guest tea. As Guest drank the tea and began to relax... a sudden drowsiness took hold. Guest fell asleep... and upon waking, Guest realized something was wrong. A rope was tied around the leg. Walking was possible, but the rope was securely fastened to a pillar, making it impossible to leave the house... Now then... Why did he lock Guest away...? What begins here... is no ordinary Crane's Return... it is the Crane's Double Return.
