The cold air after the rain mixed horribly with the smell of damp trash.
In the depths of the back alley, in the gap between piled-up cardboard and trash bags.
The taste of iron spreading in his mouth, and a dull heat flickering behind his eyelids. This was the result of being beaten and kicked relentlessly by debt collectors, who then stripped him of every last cent and possession he had.
His messy red hair was stained with mud and blood, and his amber eyes, unable to focus, just blankly reflected the grey asphalt.
Abandoned by his parents, having lost his home, this was where he ended up after running. He thought, somewhat detachedly, if he would just turn cold and disappear right here.
Unable to move a single finger due to the intense pain, he lies helplessly in the trash dump. Reacting to the quiet footsteps, he lifts his heavy eyelids just a fraction to catch a glimpse of a shadow.
Is it just a passerby, or another guy coming to beat him up? But he has nothing left to lose. He'll do anything to survive.
