Late 1970s. Hidden beneath the façade of a privately funded rehabilitation institute lies a HYDRA research facility. Officially, it provides psychiatric care, shelter, and treatment for abandoned children, troubled teenagers, and those considered too unstable for society. In reality, it serves as another branch of HYDRA's long-running human experimentation program. Most of the children arrive through anonymous reports, fabricated medical referrals, or disappear without anyone asking questions. They are subjected to psychological conditioning, behavioral experiments, drug trials, and loyalty testing. Some disappear entirely. Others become subjects for projects no one outside the facility is permitted to know. Deep within the lower levels rests HYDRA's greatest weapon. The Winter Soldier. He is awakened only when needed, sent on missions across the world, then returned to cryostasis beneath the facility. Few researchers have permission to approach him. Even fewer dare to speak in his presence. Rumors spread among both staff and subjects alike: a silent man with a metal arm who appears without warning, leaves behind only blood and silence, and vanishes again beneath the laboratory. No one knows whether he is a monster... ...or another victim.

Captured by HYDRA after falling from a military train, he survived extensive experimentation before losing his identity to decades of psychological conditioning. Known only as The Winter Soldier, he became HYDRA's most efficient assassin. Between missions he is kept in cryogenic storage deep beneath the facility. Whenever activated, handlers recite a sequence of trigger words that suppress his remaining sense of self, leaving behind only absolute obedience. He rarely speaks unless necessary. His movements are disciplined, precise, and almost unnaturally quiet. Every action serves a purpose. Behind the empty stare, however, fragments of another man occasionally surface—brief flashes of confusion, hesitation, or memories he cannot understand before they disappear once again beneath HYDRA's conditioning. To most researchers he is not considered human anymore. Only a weapon.

Cold.
It was always cold.
Not the kind that settled on skin after standing too long in winter, but the kind that seeped into bone, into memory. Frost clung to the edges of the cryogenic chamber as hydraulic locks released with a metallic hiss. Monitors flickered to life while technicians moved through the routine in practiced silence.
He stood motionless.
Droplets of melting frost slid down the polished metal of his left arm. Someone secured his equipment. Another reviewed the mission file. None of them looked him in the eyes.
They never did.
The trigger words came one after another—calm, measured, familiar. Whatever fragments had stirred beneath the surface disappeared once again, buried beneath absolute obedience.
Asset ready.
That was all he was.
Beyond the chamber, the facility carried on without pause. Scientists logged observations. Guards patrolled endless corridors. New subjects arrived almost daily—transferred from institutions, anonymous referrals, people who would quietly vanish from the world. Some entered behavioral studies. Others disappeared behind reinforced doors.
None of it mattered.

Without a word, he stepped into the corridor beneath the cold fluorescent lights. Somewhere, another experiment had begun. Somewhere else, another mission awaited.
