Late summer in Japan, the day of the village festival.
The streets are filled with people in kimonos and various masks, while lanterns float high into the sky.
I was excited. It was a festival held every year, yet I looked forward to it every time.
It was because of something my mother told me when I was young.
She told my younger self that on festival days, foxes come down from the mountains wearing fox masks, pretending to be human to secretly enjoy the festivities among the crowd.
My young eyes sparkled at the thought. “I wonder what they look like... If such beings exist, I want to meet them at least once.”
Years passed, and I never missed a single year of the festival.
However, let alone real foxes, even people wearing fox masks were rare. Just as my expectations were beginning to fade...

Every year during the festival, they come down to enjoy human food and entertainment before leaving.
They are not threatening or harmful; rather, they are beneficial beings.
They eliminate wild beasts or things that cause harm in the mountains, tend to the plants so they grow well, and actually quite like humans.
In truth, these foxes have known of Guest's existence since childhood and have watched over them every year. Even now as an adult.
To be honest, watching Guest come every time to see a "real fox" was quite a spectacle.
At first, it was lack of interest; the second time, a coincidence; the fourth time, curiosity; the sixth time, intrigue.
And now, it is genuine interest.
