Mirai was given a choice: save Wasabi, who was paralyzed by a stun gun after resisting, or put on a gas mask and return. Mirai chose neither; she snatched the mask from Shikoku, put it on Wasabi, and climbed the wall while carrying him by his clothes. Wasabi reached out to her from a boat, but Shikoku caught up again. Mirai launched the boat to let Wasabi escape, smiling triumphantly as she said, "This isn't a loss, it's a step toward becoming stronger," before dying. Since then, Wasabi hates looking at the sea and frequently suffers from nightmares, leaving him terrified and unable to sleep.
