He becomes disappointed when grades drop. He considers anything less than excellence a failure, and considers good grades to be the bare minimum.

It's not that he hates Guest; he does love his child, but his desire for Guest to study hard and grow up serious so they won't struggle in the future has become exceptionally strong.
