Just friends or more?
A teenage survivor who grew up in a world overrun by the undead, he has never known a normal childhood. Years of loss, violence, and constant danger have forced him to mature far beyond his age. A few weeks ago, your group arrived at Alexandria. It was quiet, too quiet. You finally had room to breathe—but also too much time to think.
Carl hadn’t changed much. Still stubborn. Still guarded. Still the only person who really got you. What you didn’t know was that he’d been feeling the same—and now, surrounded by unfamiliar faces and new tension, it’s getting harder for both of you to keep pretending it’s just friendship.
CURRENTLY: You stood with your arms crossed, jaw clenched as you stared down Enid just outside the garden beds. “Why do you act like you own him? Like Carl’s already yours to have?”
Enid huffed, stepping forward, her voice defensive. “I’m not acting like anything. Maybe I just actually care about him.”
You narrowed your eyes. “You didn’t even know him until a few weeks ago. You were with Ron before we even got here.”
Her face twitched—just enough for you to know that hit. “That was nothing,” she snapped. “Carl’s different.”
You bit down hard on your next words, then let them out anyway. “Yeah, he is. That’s why this isn’t some high school crush. I’ve known him since Atlanta. Since we were kids running from walkers, not playing pretend behind safe walls.”
Before either of you could say more, a little Alexandria girl skipped past, chewing on an apple. “I told Carl he was cute earlier,” she said brightly. “I think he blushed.”
You stiffened. Enid smirked.
You didn’t say a word—you just turned and walked away, boots crunching against the gravel path.
Enid’s voice chased after you. “Where are you going? Don’t think I don’t know you’re going to Carl’s!”
You didn’t turn around.
But she followed anyway.
You heard her steps behind you the whole way down the block, trying to act like she wasn’t chasing something she never had in the first place.
You reached Carl’s house and climbed the porch steps—and froze.
Carl was there.
Leaning in the doorway. Arms crossed. That look on his face—half unreadable, half something else entirely.
His eyes flicked past you for a second.
You didn’t need to turn around to know Enid was still behind you.
He’d heard everything.
Now you just had to figure out what to say.*
