Elfish and Cold: Described with an elfish face, sharp animal-like teeth, and blazing blue/brown eyes, Dally’s hardened shell comes from surviving New York street gangs and a neglectful home.Anti-Authoritarian: He despises authority and the law, viewing his criminal record as a badge of honor.Self-Preservation: He acts on his own rules, carrying an unloaded gun to protect himself without intending to truly hurt others.Hidden Depth: Behind his tough, mean exterior, he is fiercely loyal and deeply protective of his found family. Johnny Cade: Johnny is the one person Dally truly loves. He treats Johnny like a younger brother and sees in him the uncorrupted innocence he lost. Johnny’s tragic death destroys Dally’s will to live. Ponyboy Curtis: Dally serves as a rebellious mentor to Ponyboy. He provides vital help when Ponyboy and Johnny go into hiding after Bob Sheldon's death, shielding them from consequences. The Greasers: Respected by the gang for his toughness, he acts as a dependable, albeit ruthless, protector. Socs: Dally intensely hates the affluent West-side Socs. Fighting them is deeply frustrating because he realizes their societal advantages can never be undone. The Law: Because of his juvenile delinquency, Dally has an adversarial relationship with the police. The local police maintain an extensive file on him. This dynamic ultimately results in his tragic demise, as he provokes the police using an unloaded gun after losing his only anchor to the world.
The brightest thing in Tulsa ain’t the sun. It’s Sodapop Curtis. He’s so damn blinding sometimes Dally can’t see straight. It lingers, too, sunspots in his vision for days. Dally never knew a Greaser could be so damn happy. But he is. He’s always happy. Whether it’s wrestling over cards with Steve and Two-Bit, talking to his brothers, or running buck wild through the streets. And now that they had been spending an unusual amount of time together, he only saw it twice as often.
Soda’s sweet, sticks like honey in his mouth. His lips are hardly ever chapped. His eyes are shiny, and his cheeks flushed warm and red. Steals kisses offa Dally like it’s a hobby. Side of the Curtis home, bare skin roughing it against the chipped paint. Upstairs at Buck’s, in his room. Driving home after secret outings to rodeos and parties two towns over.
And he’s so damn sickly, so much so that it nearly makes Dally queasy at the sight of him. Cause Dally’s only ever known bitter. Like a foul glare or a sour taste in the back of your mouth. One so bad you oughta reach your fingers in and pluck out the offending sensation. Dally doesn’t get it. Doesn’t get how someone like Sodapop can handle so much grit and dirt. Just cause Soda’s a puppy and a sweetheart doesn’t mean Dally oughta go easy on him. He’s far from easy, gentle, or kind. He likes to bite cause he knows it hurts. And that’s Dally’s thing; that’s his mantra. Bite ‘em. Bite back before they can do it to you tenfold. Hurt ‘em because life hurts ya and never lets up. Until you’re lucky and you’re six feet under the Earth.
Dally doesn’t know how it came about. This whole thing he had for the guy. First, he started hanging around the Curtis place a bit more. Then he’d show up at the DX with Ponyboy and Johnny in tow, under the artful guise of buying the kids some chocolate bars. Next, he was swinging by, asking Soda things. Like if he’d wanna hit the next rodeo together. House party. A drag race.
The only thing is, Dally expected rejection. He knew how the others in the gang felt about him. Wary, like getting trapped in a tiger’s cage. Never too sure how he’d act next. When he’d reach out and claw them to shreds. So when Soda said yes. And then again, and then Dally found the other guy was always down to sneak out…
