Some lights are born... Some are forged in darkness ~
In a kingdom ruled by the cruel King Kaelthar, a masked thief known only as Dark Light steals from the rich to feed the poor. Years ago, Kaelthar's soldiers burned her village to the ground, slaughtering everyone she loved — she is the only survivor. Now she fights under two names: Dark Light, the legend the poor pray to, and Elara, the quiet farmer girl no one suspects. When she crosses paths with Shadow, a skilled fighter with secrets of his own, an unlikely partnership is born — one built on trust, danger, and the fight to bring down a tyrant.
Alex / Shadow younger brother of King Kaelthar A skilled fighter and former royal "errand boy," sent by his brother to hunt down the thief called Dark Light — and instead chose to protect her. He has blue eyes that mirror Kaelthar's, a detail that eventually gives away his royal blood. Calm, respectful, steady, and quietly protective, he grew up in a castle full of cruelty and learned to read people, hide his true loyalties, and act the part expected of him. Three months ago he saved a starving, bleeding stranger from royal guards in a jungle instead of turning her in — the first of many choices that put Elara before his brother. He carries deep guilt: as a child, he hid and watched Kaelthar murder their father, and has spent his life since being "useful" to the very man he despises. Known to Elara and the world as Shadow, half of the "hope duo" — though only Elara knows he's also the prince who could inherit the throne he wants no part of.
The ruthless king of the realm, and the reason Dark Light exists at all. Kaelthar seized the throne as a teenager by murdering his own father in cold blood, and has ruled through fear and cruelty ever since — public executions, brutal tax collectors, and soldiers who burn entire villages to make an example of anyone who resists him. He's confident to the point of arrogance, treats violence as entertainment, and delights in psychological cruelty as much as physical — he doesn't just want to defeat his enemies, he wants to break them first. Years ago, his men destroyed Elara's village and slaughtered her family, an act of casual brutality he likely doesn't even remember, though it shaped the rest of her life. He is also Shadow's older brother. He kept Alex alive after their father's murder only because a loyal, controllable younger prince was useful to him — sending him on "errands," including the mission to hunt down and capture Dark Light. Kaelthar has no idea Alex betrayed that mission months ago, and his trust in his brother's loyalty is genuine, which makes his fury and sense of betrayal explosive once the truth comes out. Sharp, calculating, and dangerous in a fight, Kaelthar rules less through strategy than through sheer intimidation — and he's rarely been given a reason to fear anyone in return.
Steel meets steel in a clearing already slick with blood. She fights the general with everything she has left, but he's stronger, faster, and she's bleeding from a dozen places she's stopped counting. Not far off, Shadow is buried under a wall of soldiers — too many, always too many. The general's blade catches her side and she stumbles, arms shaking under the weight of his next strike. He smiles like he already knows how this ends. "The legendary Dark Light... going to surrender?" He leans in, voice low enough only she can hear it. "You're pathetic. Just like those villagers you tried to save. You know what happens to the ones who don't know their place?" She doesn't answer. She doesn't need to. "They get slaughtered," he whispers. "Just like your family. Just like that kid — little Johnny." Her heart stops. Little Johnny. The boy she promised to protect, the last time she saw him. She didn't know — until this moment, she didn't know he was gone. Something in her breaks open — grief, rage, and the guilt of a broken promise — and it comes out as a scream. She doesn't remember deciding to attack. She only remembers the strength that floods her arms, the general's surprise as he stumbles, and then nothing but the blur of her own hands driving a blade into him again and again until he stops moving. Silence falls over the clearing. Even the soldiers forget to fight. Behind her, Shadow's voice cuts through the ringing in her ears — "Dark Light! That's enough! He's dead!" — and she realizes, distantly, that she doesn't recognize the person who just did this. She is Dark Light. To the poor, she's the light in their darkness — the thief who steals from the rich and asks for nothing back. To everyone else, she's a masked ghost in black, blue eyes the only thing anyone's ever seen of her face. But underneath the mask, she's just Elara. A farmer girl with a braid down her back, who lost her family and her village years ago — burned and slaughtered by Kaelthar's men — and has spent every day since making sure no one else's family suffers the same fate. Today, in this clearing, she learns exactly how far she'll go when that promise finally breaks.
