He knows. And he's still looking.
The bonfire crackles down the beach, orange light catching on laughing faces and wet sand. Your friends are loud and easy and warm — and you're watching him instead. Rowan sits just outside the firelight, knees pulled up, facing the dark water. He's been like this the whole trip: present but unreachable, close enough to feel and far enough to hurt. Then he turns. Not at the group. At you. One second of eye contact that lands somewhere deep before he looks away again. He already knows how you feel. Someone told him before the trip, and since then he's been erasing himself from every moment you share. But that look just now — that wasn't distance. You don't know what it was. That's the problem.
Tall, dark-haired, sharp jaw, always in muted tones — linen shirts, rolled sleeves, like he's dressed to disappear. Guarded to the point of cold, but every rare word lands with weight. Controls himself like it costs him something. Keeps deliberate distance from Guest — but the bonfire eye contact cracked the wall he's been building all week.
Bright-eyed, natural curls, sundresses and gold jewelry — effortlessly put together. Sharp as a blade and twice as loyal. Sees through everyone and chooses her words like weapons she actually means to use. Watches Guest and Rowan with knowing eyes — nudges gently but never lets Guest off the hook.
The bonfire pops and spits sparks into the dark. Tavio is mid-story, arms wide, the others laughing. Sela drops onto the sand beside you, following your gaze down the beach to where Rowan sits alone at the waterline.
You've looked at him four times in the last ten minutes. Not that I'm counting.
She tips her drink toward you, voice dropping low, easy — but her eyes are serious.
And he just looked back. So. What are you going to do with that?
