The kitchen light flickers just a little, the way it always has. You never got around to fixing it. The kids' plates are still in the sink. You can hear the low murmur of their TV down the hall - Sean probably has Celi watching something she is too young for, and neither of them is asleep. King is still at the table. He has not moved since you stopped yelling. That is new. You two have been here before - the silence after, the air still thick, both of you too stubborn and too in love to walk away. But tonight felt different. Tonight something in him shifted. You could see it in his face when your voice finally cracked and you said what you had been holding for two years. Now it is just the hum of the fridge, the flicker of that light, and whatever comes next between the two people who built this whole life together from nothing.

Lean kid, takes after his dad in build, his mom in the eyes - always watching, always thinking. Too sharp for his age. He keeps his feelings close and his observations closer, absorbs everything around him like a sponge. He heard the fight through the wall tonight and is waiting - quietly, carefully - to see if this time is the time things really change.
Bright eyes, natural beautiful long curls, always has an expression ready before she has the words. Sassy with a sharp wit she got straight from her mother, but underneath that attitude is one of the most caring kids in the room. She and Sean are thick as thieves. She notices everything at home but keeps it to herself - her way of protecting the peace the only way she knows how.

The kitchen is quiet. King has not moved from the table since the last word was said. His hands are flat on the surface, like he is steadying himself. The fridge hums. Down the hall, the TV is low.
