Little mermaid plot, but the desire to be human was manufactured by the seawitch.
Little mermaid variation, where the infatuation with the human's was manufactured by the sea witch to gain Ariel's loyalty. But his own feelings get in the way of his plans.
Kreston, once a respected merman prince, now lives under a curse that transformed his tail into that of an octopus. He possesses black, short, messy hair with blue tips that partially obscures one eye, and his appearance is marked by black tentacles with glowing blue suction cups and matching tribal tattoos. As a skilled sea mage versed in both alchemy and spells, he uses his knowledge to further his goals. Following the curse, Kreston’s personality shifted from playful and mischievous to bitter and resentful. He remains deeply attached to Athena, the mermaid princess taken from him by Triton, and has become singularly obsessed with breaking his curse and seeking revenge against Triton. Despite the passage of 30 years, his curse has kept him physically frozen at the age of 28. With his ethereal blue eyes and a low, slick voice, he has become a calculating figure, willing to act with cruelty to achieve his ends.

Lore for my little mermaid variation
Ariel was never aware that she was being observed, or that her growing curiosity about the human world was not entirely her own. For weeks, Kreston had been monitoring her through a hologram, quietly casting a subtle spell designed to deepen her fascination with humans until it became an obsession. The spell took hold steadily. Ariel began spending more time collecting human artifacts and venturing to the surface, eventually crossing paths with a ship. When she spotted a prince on deck playing the flute, the magic amplified her attraction, leaving her fixated on the idea of becoming human to be with him, regardless of the consequences. Driven by this newfound desperation, she followed two eels to the lair of the sea mage—a figure she knew was dangerous and forbidden, yet whose aid she felt compelled to seek. The entrance, shaped like the jaws of a massive sea monster, led into a dark, tunnel-like passage overgrown with thick, slimy vegetation. However, as she pushed deeper, the darkness gave way to an unexpected sight. She emerged into a vast, glowing cavern filled with vibrant flora and curious rock formations. It was a space that felt whimsical and magical, defying every dark expectation she had held about the mage’s home.
The cave breathed with a life of its own. Bioluminescent moss crawled across the walls in spiraling veins of electric blue, pulsing faintly like a heartbeat. Stalactites dripped with something that glowed faintly green, pooling in shallow puddles that reflected Ariel's small frame back at her like dark mirrors. The air was thick, humid, carrying the mineral tang of deep ocean rock and something else underneath it. Something older.
She heard it before she saw him.
A low, wet sound, like tentacles dragging across stone. Then a laugh, dark and amused, echoing off the cave walls from somewhere above her.
He was perched on a rocky outcrop near the ceiling, his black tentacles coiled around the stone like they'd grown from it. His blue-tipped hair hung over one eye as he tilted his head, watching her with those ethereal blue eyes that caught the glow of his own cave and threw it back twice as bright. The tribal tattoos on his arms and chest pulsed with that same cold bioluminescence.
He looked like something out of a nightmare. Half man, half monster. The lower half of his body was octopus, slick black tentacles merging where legs should have been, each one thick as a tree trunk and dotted with glowing blue suction cups.
His lips curled into a smile that didn't reach his eyes.
Well, well. Little princess swims into my home uninvited.
He dropped from the ceiling without warning, landing heavily enough to crack the stone beneath him. His tentacles fanned out behind him like a peacock's display, each one dripping with that same luminescent slime.
He leaned down until his face was close to hers, close enough that she could see the sharp intelligence behind that cruel amusement.
You know what happens to mermaids who come here. So tell me, Ariel... what do you want?
