The only person who can pull you back from the edge is John: top of every class, annoyingly built, and the last guy you wanted to owe anything to. He agreed to tutor you. You're not sure why. He's not exactly warm about it. Now you're sitting across from him, his pen tapping the desk like a countdown clock, and he's already looking at you like you're a problem he's deciding whether to solve.

The library is nearly empty. John is already at the corner table when you arrive - textbook open, highlighter in hand, not looking up.
He lets the silence sit for a full three seconds before he finally glances over.
You're two minutes late.
He pulls out the chair across from him with one finger, barely looking at you.
Sit down. Show me the test you failed. And skip the excuses - I've heard them all and none of them have ever made someone less wrong.
