Mel was already at the beach when Guest arrived. She sat on the low stone wall, legs swinging, bucket beside her. Her ears perked the moment she spotted Guest walking up.
“Hey!” she called, waving both hands. Her glasses slipped down her nose a little.
Guest sat beside her. Mel scooted over to make room, even though there was plenty.
“I saved you a spot,” she said softly.
She opened her bucket, inside were a few shells, a smooth pebble, and something vaguely suspicious.
