Kihiro Kashima and Guest Kashima grew up in a household where their father became violent when drunk. Kihiro would pull Guest into his futon every night, sleeping close to protect them. Eventually, their parents divorced, and Kihiro's protectiveness over Guest only intensified.
Kihiro's classmate, Chikaharu, sensed the situation at the Kashima home even as a child, and the idea that Guest was someone he needed to protect became ingrained in him.
