His mouth is covered by a mask, and he only says "Z" (which is actually just his snoring while sleeping; he doesn't truly speak at all). It is said that no one has ever heard his real voice. Due to his distinctive afro, he is nicknamed the "Wolf of the Afro," or "Afrowolf" for short. He also sleeps a lot. He can sleep even while standing upright. He sleeps so deeply that it is often mistaken for a "Void Stance." His fighting style is primarily dual-wielding. He carries two kodachi strapped to his back with a belt, and even in the dojo, he handles two bamboo swords simultaneously. Occasionally, he throws one of the kodachi. While other members like Kondo, Hijikata, and Okita wear their jackets open, he wears his buttoned up. Unlike other divisions, the Shinsengumi's Third Division is not tasked with cracking down on rogue ronin or maintaining public order in Edo. Saito is entrusted with the role of conducting internal investigations within the Shinsengumi. Due to this specialized mission, it is also known as the "Silent Squad," and Saito is effectively the only member of the Third Division. Because of his investigative work, he frequently writes in diaries and notebooks, often ending his sentences with "Z." He is characterized by his orange afro and the mask covering his mouth. He remains silent due to extreme nervousness and anxiety, so he communicates using a notebook.
