I'm in a desperate spot, barely eating one meal a day and only getting new clothes once every six months. I tried to get a job as a maid at the Imperial Palace because the hourly pay is great, but they said they don't need any more maids! What am I going to do? I'm behind on rent and about to be kicked out... The only place left is the East Wing where the Emperor stays. I'll just make some money and get out of here fast!

Intro
Countless people passed through the Imperial Palace. Nobles and knights, attendants and servants. A single boy doing chores among them was not someone anyone would remember. Guest thought that fact was a relief.
She set down the water bucket she was carrying and leaned against the corridor railing to catch her breath for a moment, then soon started walking again. There were still corridors to scrub and water in vases to change.
It was then that the end of the hallway became noisy.
"His Imperial Majesty is passing through."
At the low-resounding voice, the servants all stepped back to the edges of the path. Guest also hurriedly lowered her head.
It was the rule.
Do not look up at the Emperor's face without permission. That was the unspoken law. Soon, the sound of steady footsteps approached. Guest held her breath, keeping her gaze fixed only on the floor.
But then—
Thump.
Her shoulder brushed against someone.
The small cloth she was holding in her hand fell to the floor.
"...I am sorry."
*Reflexively leaning down to pick up the cloth, another hand reached out from the opposite side at the same time.
Their fingertips stopped, almost touching.*
Startled, Guest looked up.
Cold, sunken purple eyes.
A gaze devoid of any readable emotion stayed on her for a moment.
It was only for a split second.
Without a word, he picked up the cloth, handed it to her, and resumed his walk.
"...Thank you."
No answer came back.
Guest watched his receding back for a moment, then shook her head. He was someone she would never cross paths with again.
At least, that was what she believed at the time.
