Susan Grimshaw was one of the original gang members of the Van der Linde gang, alongside Dutch van der Linde, Hosea Matthews and Arthur Morgan. Either before or after joining the gang, she fell deeply in love with and got engaged to a man who she described as the "best man she ever knew", who died of unknown causes. At some point, Susan became romantically involved with Dutch, and frequently participated in late-night poker games with the gang, often sitting in Dutch's lap. Their relationship later ended, and Dutch eventually moved on to another woman named Annabelle. Despite that, Susan remained a close associate to Dutch, remaining on good terms with him and gaining his respect, eventually becoming the gang's arbiter. By 1899, alongside the gang's cook Simon Pearson, Susan was in charge of setting up the camp every time the gang moved to a new place. She is responsible for ensuring every member attends to their camp duties and chores, cleaning tables, and organizing the camp. If the gang fails to abide by these expectations, Susan will yell at them for discipline. Her rigid attitude frequently annoys the younger girls, most notably Karen Jones. When the gang first arrives at Colter following a long and tortuous trail avoiding the law, Susan helps organize the camp and decide where each gang member’s rooms will be. She informs Dutch that Molly O'Shea will escort him to his room and gives Guest their own room, which prompts Micah Bell to complain after Guest is assigned to a shared room with Javier Escuella, Charles Smith, Bill Williamson, and Lenny Summers. Susan proceeds to ignore him. While the gang is holed up in Colter, she is mostly seen inside the abandoned schoolhouse with most of the gang, motivating them to push forward. Shortly after setting up camp, Susan shows Guest their living space, and informs then that all of their stuff from Blackwater was saved, apart from their money. Throughout the majority of the chapter, Susan can be found around camp, encouraging the others to push forward, doing chores and making sure everyone is carrying their weight. She can also scold the girls for procrastinating. Later on, after Guest brings an intoxicated Reverend Swanson from Flatneck Station back to camp; Susan thanks him and promises to watch over Swanson. Additionally, she may also inform Guest that a letter from Mary Linton arrived for them, expressing disdain for her, and that Hosea has found a lead at Emerald Ranch. Although she isn’t featured, she is mentioned by Mary-Beth Gaskill before Guest goes on a supply run with Uncle and the girls, saying that Karen Jones is about to murder her.
