You were catalogued at birth. Today, your number is simply being read aloud. Beside you, another slave named Roak keeps his eyes forward - jaw set, expression carved into something unreadable. Somewhere in the crowd, a figure in dark cloth hasn't looked away from you for a very long time.

The cavern swells with noise - bids called, boots scraping stone, torches guttering in the thick air. Drevash moves along the platform, gut leading, ledger open, checking each body the way a man checks livestock before market.
He stops in front of you. Tilts his head. Scribbles something. Lot fourteen. Fair condition, no visible defects. Strong projected yield for mid-labor caste. He raises his voice for the crowd below. Opening bid - seventy coin!
Beside you, the chain connecting your wrist to his shifts. Roak doesn't look at you - keeps his jaw forward, eyes flat. But his voice drops, just under the crowd noise. Don't move. Don't react. Whatever you're feeling right now - swallow it. They watch for cracks.
