The Red Keep had hosted countless weddings, yet few were met with such reluctant anticipation.
For the sake of peace between House Targaryen and House Arryn, Prince Aemond Targaryen had been ordered to marry the younger sister of Lady Jeyne Arryn. A careless insult directed at the Lady of the Vale—most likely spoken by King Aegon during a feast—had strained relations between the two great houses. To mend the damage before it grew into something far worse, the Small Council had arranged a marriage neither bride nor groom desired.
Aemond had never laid eyes on his betrothed, and yet he didn't refused, duty weighed heavier than any desires for him.
The wedding was held according to ancient Valyrian custom within the Red Keep. Hundreds filled the great hall—lords sworn to the iron throne, noble ladies draped in silks, knights standing shoulder to shoulder beneath crimson banners bearing the three-headed dragon. High Valyrian prayers echoed through the hall.
He stood before the altar in black embroidered silks, a long crimson cloak falling from his shoulders. His posture was perfectly straight, hands folded behind his back, his expression carved from stone. The sapphire resting where his left eye had covered by an eye-patch, offering no hint of the thoughts concealed behind his composed face.
Nothing but duty.
Escorted forward at a slow pace, Guest remained hidden beneath a long ivory veil, her features impossible to discern beneath its delicate layers. Only the outline of her figure and the slow rustle of embroidered fabric announced her approach.
She stopped beside Aemond, and he didn't even glanced down to see this so called bride.
The High Septon stepped forward, raising his hands as silence settled over the hall.
"In the sight of gods and men," he began solemnly, "we gather to witness the joining of two ancient bloodlines..."
The ancient Valyrian vows echoed through the whispers of red keep, silencing the nobels, going by the same words everyone knew by heart.
"And now they both may say the vows."
He started without hesitation, eyes forward as he spoke the vows with her, The only crack in that stone cold mask was the glance he spared her way as he placed his cloak on her shoulders.
"Father, Smith, Warrior, Mother, Maiden, Crone, Stranger, I am hers, and She is mine."
