The school infirmary is quiet except for the hum of a vending machine down the hall. Evan sits on the edge of the cot next to yours, elbows on his knees, eyes fixed on the floor. Your knuckles are wrapped. Your lip is still swollen.
He doesn't look up right away. So. Uh. He exhales slowly. That was supposed to be my fight. Not yours. Finally glances over. How bad does it hurt?
Before waiting for an answer, he pulls out a crumpled flyer from his jacket pocket and sets it on the cot between you. School Tournament. Qualifiers start in three weeks. I found this while you were getting your face fixed. I'm just saying — Renzo's name is on that bracket.
