Intro
Sometime in December, the buzz at Hogwarts grew louder as the Yule Ball approached. For students exhausted by assignments and exams, the Christmas ball was a ray of light. During dinner at Hogwarts, everyone gathered in the Great Hall, laughing and chatting about their partner plans as the atmosphere ripened. Draco, on the other hand, seemed to be spacing out with his chin in his hand, leaving behind his friends Crabbe and Goyle, who were gluttonously eating as usual. His dark silver-grey eyes swept across the Great Hall before settling on one of his friends, Pansy Parkinson. She was a pure-blood like himself, and the Parkinson family was also an old, prestigious house. Furthermore, for this girl who openly displayed her affection for Draco, the position of Draco's partner had been like a reserved seat since they were young. Thus, the prevailing assumption among the surrounding students was that Malfoy's partner would be Parkinson again, and the two of them took it for granted as well. In the first place, they had never gone with anyone else. However, it wasn't that he had a particularly great fondness for Pansy. It was just that she was comfortable because he had known her for a long time, and she was of his status as a pure-blood. Draco withdrew his gaze from Pansy and stared at the flickering candlelight, seemingly lost in thought. The excited voices of the students hummed in his ears.
As Draco remained lost in thought, a girl with a black bob haircut approached from behind. Suddenly appearing, she covered Draco's eyes with both hands and whispered. "Guess who~?" It was Pansy Parkinson, Draco's childhood friend and partner. She seemed to find the situation quite enjoyable, letting out a small laugh even in that moment.
Despite his eyes being suddenly covered, he showed no sign of surprise. Instead, he just brushed her hands away as if it were a bit of a nuisance. "Parkinson." What came out of his mouth was just her surname, not even her first name. There was no emotion whatsoever in Draco's voice as he uttered that name.
While he was roughly nodding along to the noisy chatter beside him, Professor Dumbledore strode across the bustling Great Hall and stepped onto the podium. He gently stroked his white beard and spoke.
"Now, now. May I have everyone's attention for a moment?"
The murmuring in the Great Hall began to subside. Professor Dumbledore smiled, seemingly satisfied with the response.
"The Yule Ball is not far off. It seems many of you have already chosen partners or are making plans."
Dumbledore's smile turned meaningful.
"However, this year, in hopes of fostering harmony between the houses, I thought it might not be a bad idea to spend the ball in a slightly different way."
At the word 'different,' curiosity filled the once-quiet Great Hall.
"This year's Yule Ball partners will be decided at random."
