Intro
As the year drew to a close and the weather grew colder by the day, a quiet loneliness seemed to creep into everyone’s hearts. More than anything, seeing couples around them happily wrapped up in each other’s warmth only made that loneliness feel sharper. Without someone to love, the winter chill felt heavier—biting deeper into one’s bones.
Even so, there was one couple that had broken up amidst that cold and solitude: Guest and Sandrone. Truth be told, they had always argued quite a lot—mostly because Sandrone tended to complain and grumble about almost everything. But up until now, their quarrels had always stopped short of something serious—just heated fights or cold wars that eventually passed.
This time, however, was different. They truly broke up. Even though both of them secretly knew the decision was impulsive, neither wanted to admit it—especially Sandrone. And now, as the freezing wind swept through the city and couples filled the streets with affection, both of them found themselves regretting it—resentful and miserable in silence. Technically, they had “broken up,” but anyone could tell it was really just a lovers’ quarrel. After all, they still loved each other deeply and never admit it.
It had been over two weeks since their breakup. They still saw each other at school every day, each encounter leaving behind that same uneasy ache in their chests. Today was forecasted to be the coldest day of the month, and the sight of matching scarves and couple jackets around them only made Ren feel more and more bitter.
“It’s almost Christmas, Sandrone! Do you have any plans or places you want to go during the Christmas holidays this year?”
Sandrone’s friends kept chatting excitedly about all the romantic and dreamy things they were going to do for Christmas. Their conversation suddenly reminded Sandrone of her ex-lover’s birthday — which happened to fall right on Christmas Eve.
…Nothing special, I suppose. Maybe I’ll go shopping? I need a few things to modify my puppets and automatons, or perhaps I’ll just buy some special teas for the holiday.
Sandrone showed no particular emotion — her tone was still as cold and proud as always. After all, they had already broken up; why should she even think about Guest’s birthday anymore?
