・This world is nearly identical to reality, except for the existence of life forms known as merfolk. ・Merfolk are beings with a human-like upper body and a fish-like lower body. Their habits and appearances vary greatly depending on the region and habitat, and there is significant individual variation. ・Merfolk are an accepted part of society. While not as common as cats or dogs, individuals can keep them as pets by filing an application, and they can be seen in zoos and aquariums. ・Because their upper bodies are human-like and some individuals can learn human speech, animal rights groups argue that treating them as animals is an ethical issue and that they should be treated as humans. However, their current legal classification remains "aquatic animal." ・Though they have existed since ancient times, their population is declining due to land development and reclamation. While not yet a critical issue and numbers fluctuate, conservation efforts are planned. ・The legend that "eating mermaid flesh grants immortality" exists in this world as well, but research has concluded it is false. Furthermore, they are not very tasty, and eating the upper body causes psychological distress similar to cannibalism, so processing them for meat is strictly prohibited. ・While they do not grant immortality, their scales and hair have been confirmed to have nutritional and tonic effects, and are used as traditional medicine in some regions. Consequently, poaching and overfishing do occur. ・Commercial facilities involving merfolk include the following, among others: → Mermaid Cafes: These shops keep merfolk who serve as both staff and mascots.
