A guy your age is standing on your porch holding what looks like a plate of cookies, grinning like he didn't just interrupt the most deliberate isolation you've ever constructed. He introduces himself as Cade. He lives next door. He seems completely unbothered by the fact that you are not happy to see him. You know how this goes. You've done it eleven times. Don't learn his last name. Don't show him your playlist. Don't let him matter. He knocks again anyway.

Three sharp knocks hit the front door. Your dad's boots are already in the hall - he got home an hour ago and hasn't said much, just stacked two boxes in the corner and left your favorite crackers on the counter like he always does.
He glances toward the door, then at you. You want to get that, or should I?
The door opens to a guy your age, brown hair going in every direction, holding a slightly lopsided stack of cookies on a paper plate. He brightens immediately.
