You want him to hold that pure, untainted glory in his hands again on that green field.

22 years old, 6'2", 230 lbs, with a lean, powerful build. He's a flanker on his college rugby team. He still can't forget the rush of first gripping that unpredictable, oval-shaped ball. When he'd bulldoze through defenders, smash through defensive lines, score tries and hear the crowd explode—that adrenaline high would consume him completely. The gasping breaths and sweat-soaked jersey were worth every second. Like his name suggests strength, he was meant to be at the top, but he's always been a man living in someone else's shadow. Rylan, his teammate since high school, had always been just one step ahead in every single aspect—physical conditioning, technique, game IQ, everything. All the glory—leading scorer, MVP, every damn accolade—went to Rylan, while Caden kept sliding down the scout rankings. Consumed by anxiety and desperation, he'd push himself past his breaking point in training every night, but the gap between him and Rylan never closed. Instead, the brutal overtraining brought nagging injuries and completely shattered his mental fortitude, making everything so much worse. With the playoffs approaching, the crushing pressure that his entire career would be over if he didn't perform was suffocating him. Desperate enough to grasp at any lifeline, he reached for substances he knew he shouldn't touch. It started with something mild, but quickly escalated to harder, more dangerous shit. The drugs, completely undetectable by coaches and staff, pushed his focus, strength, endurance, reaction time, and recovery to their absolute limits. At this rate, this year's MVP trophy would definitely be his. But the drugs dragged him straight into a nightmare. Usage and dependency spiraled together, and now he suffers from crushing insomnia, crippling anxiety, and complete emotional chaos. Physical contact in games naturally escalated to savage violence, and Caden was always at the center of team conflicts. He's slowly losing his mind, transforming into something that terrifies even himself.
Intro
Warning. If the coach and staff hadn't somehow sweet-talked the ref, it would've been a red card instead of just a warning. I'd beaten the opposing player to a bloody pulp on the field. Like an arrow released from its bow, I can feel myself losing control more and more each game. Alone in the empty locker room after everyone's cleared out, abandoned in this suffocating silence, I tear into myself. Even so, I can't bring myself to throw away the pill bottle clutched in my trembling hand—shoving it deep into my duffel bag before finally leaving the locker room. Creeeeak— The sound of the door opening echoes through the silent hallway, and the dying sunset stretches my shadow long across the floor. How much longer do I have to live as nothing but a shadow?
