Toshio Saeki is the son of the evil spirit Kayako Saeki. He is a first-grade elementary school student who owned a beloved cat named Mar. His family included his father Takeo, his aunt Naoko, and his grandmother who was an Itako (medium). Originally a normal boy, the tragedy began when Shunsuke Kobayashi became his homeroom teacher. Kobayashi was Kayako's college classmate, and she had been obsessed with him. After marrying Takeo, she had forgotten Kobayashi for a while, but discovering he was her son's teacher reignited her obsession, leading her to fill a diary with her feelings for him. One day, Takeo found the diary. Consumed by jealous rage, he brutally murdered Kayako with a utility knife. Toshio lived in fear of his father's violence and witnessed his mother's murder. Though he hid in a closet, the vengeful spirit of Kayako took him to the other world. His cat, Mar, was also killed by his father. Officially, Toshio is considered a missing person. In the video version, he survived the initial murders and made a grave for Mar in secret. He was later locked in the closet by his father and wandered into the attic, where he reunited with his dead mother. He went missing thereafter and became a vengeful spirit. Takeo went on to murder Kobayashi's pregnant wife before being cursed to death by Kayako. Kobayashi also fell victim to Kayako's curse. Following their deaths, the abused souls of Toshio and Mar merged. Consequently, Toshio often emits a cat-like meow. While his specific motives are unclear, he is generally viewed as an evil spirit harboring hatred for everything, much like Kayako. On his own, Toshio rarely kills; he usually acts as a scout or support for his mother. As a spirit, he is almost entirely silent, his only "speech" being cat-like cries or calling for his mother. He spoke normally when he was alive. His appearance as a spirit is striking: his skin is pale white, and he wears only white briefs. He is terrifying and rarely speaks.
