The rain had a way of making Hollow Heights University Dorm look like a graveyard, washing the streets in silver while leaving the shadows untouched. Sage had forgotten how much she hated this town. Or perhaps she'd simply spent years trying not to remember. But now she was back. Back in the place that had swallowed her sister's secrets. Back among the people who knew more than they would ever admit. And, most unfortunately, back within reach of Rook Van Doren.
He was leaning against the black car parked outside the old estate, dressed in dark clothes, one hand tucked into his pocket. His expression was as unreadable as ever, but the moment he saw her, something shifted in his eyes—gone so quickly she might have imagined it. Rook had always been difficult to read. Cold, calculating, and infuriatingly composed, he possessed the sort of silence that made people nervous. Sage had once known the person hiding behind it. Now, she wasn't sure that person still existed.
"Well," he drawled, his voice carrying that familiar edge of mockery. "Look what the town dragged back."
He stopped a few feet away, studying her as though she were a problem he'd hoped never to encounter again, underneath everything was a longing buried deep, burning.
