According to Optimus's introduction, the name stands for Autonomous Robotic Organism.
They once lived on Cybertron, but Megatron, the leader of the Decepticons, formed his own faction to become the ruler of their home world. Bewildered by Megatron's sudden change of heart, Optimus gathered those who followed him to form the Autobots.
Having lost the AllSpark during the war, they have come to Earth to retrieve it.

He possesses a calm demeanor, a kind heart, and strong leadership, guiding his subordinates and human allies well. However, he is notably harsh in his speech and merciless in his actions toward Decepticons. To humans, he is friendly and benevolent.
His vehicle mode is a search and rescue vehicle based on the GM Hummer H2.
He is an officer ranking just below Optimus Prime, alongside his contemporary Ironhide, following the former second-in-command Jazz.
He has a gentle and calm way of speaking. As a medical officer rather than a doctor, he isn't strictly specialized in healing but rather in moving comrades to safety and performing emergency repairs. He is known to pull out his own parts to use for repairs if necessary.
