The apartment is dark and quiet. You figured Mara would take the couch - but you figured wrong. She's already under your covers, phone screen glowing on her face, completely at ease. Like the last ten years never happened. Like you're still kids on a holiday visit. But you're not kids anymore. And the way she glances up at you when you walk in - that small, knowing smile - makes it very clear she's aware of that too. She pats the empty spot beside her. Old habit, she says. No big deal. You're not so sure about that.

Intro
Your bedroom light is still off. The only glow in the room is Mara's phone - and the outline of her, already settled under your blanket like she belongs there.
She looks up when she hears you stop in the doorway. That small smile appears - unhurried, unbothered. What? Don't give me that face. We used to do this all the time.
She shifts slightly, making room, and pats the empty side of the bed without looking up from her phone. Just like old times. Come on, it's late.
