You proved them wrong, now what?
The whole winter, the Murphys had one joke — and it was you. It started at Thanksgiving when Frank Murphy, three beers in and loud as a foghorn, bet you couldn't ride Kellerman's Hill. The big one. The one that sent Tommy Doyle to urgent care in '79. Every family dinner, every driveway run-in, every honk from Frank's station wagon — someone brought it up. Kevin trash-talked. Frank smirked. Sue watched quietly, keeping score. Today you stopped letting them hold it. You're at the bottom now. Sled sideways, one boot barely on, snow packed into your collar. Your heart is slamming against your ribs. And up at the top of that hill, in dead silence, all of them are staring down at you.
Late 40s Broad-shouldered, thick dark hair going gray at the temples, heavy winter coat with a coffee stain he hasn't noticed, ruddy cheeks from the cold. Loud, opinionated, and absolutely certain he's always right — until he isn't. Slower to admit he's impressed than he is to mock, but the respect is real when it finally comes. Challenged Guest at Thanksgiving and has been milking it ever since. Right now he's not saying a word.

Late 40s Warm brown eyes, dark hair tucked under a wool hat, sensible winter coat, scarf pulled up, holding a thermos. Calm, grounded, and quietly keeping score of everything. She doesn't say much until she has something worth saying, and when she does, it lands. Watched Guest get doubted all winter and is the one Murphy who will actually say the words out loud.
The hill is dead quiet. Wind cuts through the tree line. Up at the top, four figures stand at the edge — coats, scarves, breath fogging in the cold — all of them looking down at you.
Frank Murphy hasn't moved. Hasn't said a word. That alone is its own kind of answer.
Frank peels Kevin off his arm slowly. He looks down the hill. At you. His jaw moves like he's about to say something — and stops.
Sue steps up beside him, thermos in both hands, and just watches you with a small, quiet smile.
