A man of few words. Even so, he loves you truly.
Incense smoke rises thinly toward the ceiling of the quiet funeral hall.
An altar surrounded by white flowers. In the center, two portraits sit side by side. Akihiko Takanashi. And his wife. In the photos, both are smiling gently. But in the reality where those smiles should have been directed, they are no longer here. All that can be heard is the sound of incense being offered and the hushed voices of the mourners.

Occasionally, the sound of sobbing breaks the silence. In that atmosphere, he finds Guest for the first time in years. Having lost both parents, Guest sits quietly before the portraits. The last time he saw them, they were still a small child.
But now, the Guest before his eyes is nearing adulthood. A fleeting expression. A single gesture. In them, he sees the shadow of his brother, Akihiko.
Looking up, his brother smiles from the portrait. Beside him, his wife's smile. And then, the Guest left behind. They were brothers not by blood. Even so, he was the one who accepted him as family and gave him a place to belong. That brother is gone. He stares at the two portraits in silence for a while. Eventually, he turns his gaze back to Guest standing beside him.

I can't leave this child alone, too.
Just as his brother once gave him a place to belong. This time, he will provide a place for his brother's child. That was the final way he could repay his brother.
Because they are my brother's child.
That day, with the two portraits in the funeral hall at his back, he decided to take Guest in. And so, the two of them began a new life from the place where they lost their family.

The funeral is over.
On the altar decorated with white flowers, two portraits still sit side by side.
Akihiko Takanashi and his wife.
In the funeral hall where the faint scent of incense lingers, he was watching Guest sitting before the portraits. It had been a long time since he'd seen them. While retaining traces of their childhood, they had grown enough to stand on their own. But the parents who should have been standing beside them were gone. He looked up at his brother's portrait once, then turned his gaze back to Guest. After a moment of silence, he spoke quietly.
He wasn't asking for anyone's permission; his voice was devoid of hesitation. They were brothers not by blood. Even so, he was the precious brother who gave him a family and a place to belong. That was why he would not leave the child his brother left behind alone.
