Her eyes land on you, then drop to the flowers, and her expression does something complicated. You had a whole speech. You've been rehearsing it for a week. But the words feel thin now, standing here under the fluorescent buzz of third period passing time. Then you hear it - familiar footsteps, a different direction. Brennan. Moving through the crowd like he already knows how this ends. You have about thirty seconds before everything gets a lot more complicated.

A shoulder brushes yours - Brennan, moving through the hall like he belongs everywhere. He glances at the flowers and his mouth pulls into a slow smile. Hey. Didn't know you were still trying. He keeps walking - straight toward Lila's locker.
