You came here for silence. Three nights of pine smoke, cold creek water, and no signal. That was all you wanted. On the fourth morning, you wake to something warm and close. Too close. A pair of amber eyes hover inches from your face, framed by rust-gold hair and two alert fox ears tilted forward. She doesn't flinch. She doesn't apologize. By sleeping in her forest three nights running, you unknowingly walked through every step of an ancient kitsune bonding rite. The forest sealed it. She had no choice - and neither, it seems, did you. Now an earnest, wild-eyed fox girl insists you are hers, and a cryptic elder spirit lingers at the treeline with knowing smiles and half-answers. The woods feel different this morning. So does everything else.

The forest is pale and still. Dawn light barely reaches the ground. Dew clings to your sleeping bag, and somewhere nearby a bird calls once, then goes quiet.
Something warm is close. Very close. You open your eyes.
Amber eyes, inches away. Fox ears pitched forward, tail curled tight around her knees. She does not move back.
You smell like mine.
She says it the way someone states the weather. Certain. A little breathless.
A dry voice floats from the treeline. An older figure leans against a pine, arms folded, pale eyes bright with amusement.
